Alex Smith said this week that he hasn’t really thought about his future beyond this season. The Washington quarterback has had a remarkable recovery from his life-threatening leg injury, but the 36-year-old hasn’t outright said if he wants to return next year.
“There will be time to think about all that other stuff down the line,” he said.
If Smith does want to continue his career, Washington would reportedly welcome him back with open arms.
The NFL Network reported that the team wants Smith to return in 2021, serving potentially as a bridge quarterback to the team’s next franchise signal-caller. This is significant because the news not only reflects Smith’s progress, but also because Washington can save a lot of money by moving on from Smith in the offseason. But they apparently have no interest in the latter.
Smith has played very well since his return. In four outings — two of which were starts — the three-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 918 yards and two touchdowns.
While he has four interceptions, Washington’s offense has taken a leap with Smith under center and coaches have praised the veteran for his leadership.
After this year, Smith has two years left on his contract — but none of his remaining base salaries are guaranteed. Smith’s base salary in 2021 is nearly $19 million, while the number is $20.8 million for 2022.
Washington could still look to add another quarterback to the roster this offseason, whether through free agency, the draft or a possible trade.
