BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - Police are asking the public for help in finding a man suspected of shooting and injuring a Massachusetts State Police trooper during a traffic stop last week.

The suspect was identified by law enforcement Tuesday as Andre K. Sterling.

Police allege Sterling, 35, shot Trooper John Lennon in Barnstable at about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

“We ask that Mr. Sterling turn himself in and bring this to a quick conclusion,” state police Superintendent Col. Christopher Mason said at a news conference. “We ask that any family, friends of Mr. Sterling implore him to do the same.”

He faces several charges including armed assault with attempted murder, possession of a firearm, and assault and battery with a firearm. He should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Lennon, 28, is a rookie trooper who graduated from the State Police Academy in May. He is assigned to the Yarmouth Barracks.

The bullet traveled through his right hand and appears to have struck his body armor near the shoulder area, police have said. He was released from Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday and will remain on injured leave as he recovers.
