OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Authorities have arrested two people during a protest over the deadly police shooting of a Black man during a Nebraska traffic stop.
Several dozen demonstrators called Friday night on Omaha police to release video footage of the shooting death of Kenneth Jones. Police said in a news release that Jones, who was 35, reached for a gun that he had in his waistband before he was shot Thursday night, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
Police ultimately declared the protest an unlawful assembly; scanner traffic indicates something was thrown.
Officers arrested one woman on suspicion of destruction of property and disorderly conduct and a man on suspicion of third degree assault on an officer and carrying a concealed weapon, police said. Meanwhile, two people were cited on suspicion of disorderly conduct and another on suspicion of obstructing an officer.
The World-Herald reports that tear gas also was fired.
Police have not indicated what led to the traffic stop in which Jones was shot. A handgun, with a round in the chamber, was found on the ground underneath him.
Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said Friday that a grand jury will investigate the shooting and that the two officers involved have been put on administrative leave. The officers’ names weren’t released.
Family members of Jones, who gathered Friday near the apartment of Jones’ mother, declined to comment on the shooting.
