SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - One of the members of Louisiana’s top school board is resigning, saying his job has limited the time he can devote to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Tony Davis, a Republican from Natchitoches, is one of eight elected members to the 11-member education board, which also has three gubernatorial appointees.
Davis represents District 4 covering 10 parishes across northwestern Louisiana. He won a second term in the 2019 election without opposition. He told The Shreveport Times that his resignation will take effect Jan. 20.
The exiting board member said his latest job as senior director of a workforce initiative with the National Association of Manufacturers covers 15 states and limits the time he can devote to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Davis, previously executive director of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce, said he and his family likely will have to move because of the manufacturing association position.
Gov. John Bel Edwards will set the special election date to fill the seat representing Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, Vernon, Webster and Winn parishes.
