The Washington Football Team had its first player to test positive for the coronavirus during the season — forcing the team to enter the NFL’s intensive protocols.
The team said in a statement Tuesday that all of its meetings will be conducted virtually and the team’s facility will be only open to staff with limited access.
Washington became aware of the result late Monday.
“The player immediately self-isolated and the contact tracing data was evaluated,” the team said in a statement. “All of the player’s close contacts have been told to quarantine. … We will continue to work closely with th NFL’s Chief Medical Officer rand follow the league’s guidance.”
Until now, Washington had been one of the few teams to not have a in-season positive camp. At the start of training camp, tight end Logan Thomas was placed on the league’s COVID-19 reserve list. Rookie wideout Antonio Gandy-Golden also had the virus in March.
The NFL has seen in uptick in positive tests as cases rise throughout the country.
On Monday, the team announced it would not host fans for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals after previously doing so for its Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants. The team had said they had consulted local Maryland officials in making the decision.
