New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is expected to miss “some time” with a rib injury that knocked him out of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to the NFL Network.
The network did not specify how many weeks Brees will be out, though added the Saints are “bracing” for an absence. The 41-year-old said after the win that the injury “kept me from doing my job.”
The NFL Network reported Brees suffered a rib contusion and will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine cartilage damage. The Saints are expected to keep Brees out until he fully heals.
If Brees is out, backup Jameis Winston will have an opportunity to revive his career. Drafted No. 1 overall in 2014, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter signed with the Saints in the offseason for the league minimum.
Last year, Teddy Bridgewater took advantage of a similar situation. Brees missed five games due to a thumb injury and Bridgewater’s performance led him to sign a three-year, $63 million deal with the Carolina Panthers in March.
