The screaming eagle is back — with a fresh coat of feathers.
The Washington Capitals unveiled Monday a modern take on its old jersey, reintroducing the screaming eagle it wore from 1995 to 2007. The original screaming eagle uniforms debuted with a blue, black and bronze color scheme.
That has been reimagined and updated with the current red, white and blue colors, and the “Reverse Retro” Adidas uniform will be worn for select games during the 2020-21 campaign. Across the center of the uniform is the star-spangled screaming eagle in blue, and “CAPITALS” is splayed underneath across the waist. The capital dome logo, first used in 1997, is featured on the jersey’s shoulder.
While the original 1997 away jersey — the inspiration for this new edition — was predominantly white, the main part of this revised version is red, sticking with the team’s modern colors.

“We are excited to unveil the Capitals Reverse Retro jersey that showcases a significant era of our team history,” said Hunter Lochman in a release, the Monumental Sports & Entertainment chief marketing officer. “Working closely with adidas and the NHL, our goal was to pay tribute to our 97-98 team, refreshing the jersey design and, most importantly, following through on the feedback from our fanbase by reinstating the iconic Screaming Eagle.”
According to the team, the jersey will be available to purchase beginning December 1.
