Alex Smith couldn’t miss Logan Thomas, not when the tight end was that open over the middle of the field. In fact, midway through four quarters of Sunday’s 30-27 loss at Detroit on Sunday, the Washington quarterback could hardly miss anyone.

That 27-yard completion to Thomas pushed Smith over the 300-yard mark, the first time Smith has thrown 300-plus yards in consecutive weeks during his career. The 36-year-old quarterback entered late in the first quarter last week against the Giants once Kyle Allen departed with a dislocated ankle, and he nearly led a comeback.

He threw for 325 yards, completing 24 of his 32 passes. His three interceptions — including two within the last three minutes of the game — were too much to overcome, though.

And back under center as a starter for the first time since breaking his leg and undergoing a lengthy two-year recovery process, Smith aired things out against the Lions.

His 38 completions were the most in his career and he finished with a career-high 390 yards while leading Washington on another comeback trail. After Antonio Gibson leveled the score at 24 with his second rushing touchdown of the day, Smith led the offense down the field once more.

He wasn’t as precise on that final drive, though, and Washington stalled at the 23-yard line. Dustin Hopkins once more tied the game, but with 16 seconds remaining, Smith finished one of his best career passing performances on the sideline, watching as Detroit sealed a win with a last-second 59-yard field goal from Matt Prater.
