KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Star plans to move its offices out of its prominent home in downtown Kansas City by the end of next year, the newspaper announced Tuesday.
The Star also will move its printing operations out of the two-block-long, glass building to the Des Moines Register in Iowa beginning in the first quarter of 2021.
The moves come after the newspaper’s parent company, McClatchy, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, which allowed the company to renegotiate leases.
The Star sold the building in 2019 to Ambassador Hospitality, LLC and has been operating under a lease-back agreement.
“Leaving a huge office space that is way beyond our current needs allows us to realize savings that will sustain other operations as we continue to align expenses with our digital transformation,” said Star President and Editor Mike Fannin.
The search for a smaller office space for offices will begin soon, Fannin said.
The newspaper said 68 full-time and 56 part-time production employees will be laid off when the printing operations are moved.
