CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Douglas County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 64-year-old homeless man as a suspect in the death of a woman who was sharing a tent with him near a Home Depot south of Carson City.

The sheriff’s office says Kenneth Allen Hayes was booked into the county jail on suspicion of open murder and failing to register as a sex offender. He’s accused of killing 44-year-old Melissa Ann Riley.

Investigators say the two were living in a tent in a draw at the base of a hill below the Home Depot in Indian Hills along U.S. Highway 395.

Hayes was arrested after someone walking in the area spotted a body in the sagebrush at about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The (Gardnerville) Record-Courier reports Hayes has convictions in Douglas for attempted lewdness with a minor in Douglas County in 1993 and for open and gross lewdness in Washoe County in 1988. The Nevada Sex Offender’s registry indicates he previously was living at the Frontier Motel in Carson City.

It’s not clear if he has a lawyer or will be appointed one.
