LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Health insurer Humana Inc. said Tuesday that it plans to hire an additional 600 military veterans and 150 military spouses in Kentucky during the next four years.
The Louisville, Kentucky-based company’s commitment to add more veterans to its workforce is an example of how businesses can turn “our gratitude into action,” Gov. Andy Beshear said.
“These are solid, stable and important jobs, offering the kind of work and good wages that help us build a better Kentucky,” Beshear said in joining Humana executives for the virtual announcement.
It’s the type of job creation that Kentucky’s leaders are hoping will be repeated throughout the business sector to heal an economy damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our job coming out of COVID isn’t just to compete for any jobs, but the good jobs of the future, and that’s exactly what we’re talking about here today,” the Democratic governor said.
Humana launched a veterans’ initiative nearly a decade ago that has led to the hiring of thousands of military community members for jobs companywide, said Alan Wheatley, Humana’s Retail Segment president. Their “professionalism and skills” have made them valued employees, he said.
Humana’s newest hiring commitment bolsters Kentucky’s goal of being the nation’s most military- and veteran-friendly state, Beshear said.
