RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle Thursday was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene, police said.

The 35-year-old man, whose name has not been released, allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said in a news release.

The vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car, authorities said.

As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander driving south, police said. The Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital.

The Outlander’s driver was not injured and cooperated with police.

The city of Riverside is about 55 miles (88.51 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.
