Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day in a record-breaking way, despite the coronavirus pandemic, uneasy quarantines and social restrictions.

The National Retail Federation reports that 86% of Americans plan to celebrate Mother’s Day this year — and they are expected to drop an unprecedented $26.7 billion doing it.

“Mother’s Day may be more meaningful this year for many consumers. The coronavirus has put a spotlight on opportunities to celebrate and show their loved ones they care. In fact, 78% say that celebrating Mother’s Day is more important to them this year, given the current state of the pandemic,” the retail organization said in an analysis.

“This sentiment shows up in spending plans as well: On average, consumers say they plan to spend $205, approximately $8 more than last year,” the organization said.

But the health crisis has a heavy influence. Two thirds plan to be in high tech mode, contacting mom via ZOOM, FaceTime or some other virtual means. There are few special outings for mom — but lots of gift cards, traditional flowers and practical housewares or garden tools.

The retail organization conducted its research — a poll of 8,300 adult consumers — April 2-6.
