NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Dozens of employees at Charleston Southern University will be placed on furlough as efforts to slow the spread of the new novel coronavirus continues.
Charleston Southern University President Dondi Costin announced the move affecting 47 full-time employees in a letter to employees on Monday. The letter also noted a reduction in spending, a continued hiring freeze for most positions and delays in capital projects as part of the necessary economic moves put in place amid the global crisis, WCIV-TV reported.
“In the face of continuing coronavirus-induced uncertainty, we, like all of higher education, must confront the fiscal and other realities of our sector head on,” Costin said.
In addition to the furloughs, the school said senior officers will be taking a 10% cut in pay over the next 12 months as well.
The furloughs are scheduled to start on Monday and end on July 31.
