JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Six officers fatally shot a man suspected of domestic violence when he reached into his pocket while approaching them on Sunday night, Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials said.
The officers were called to the home after Philippe Periera and his girlfriend got into an argument, Cheif T.K. Waters told news outlets. He said the man battered the woman and fired a shot into a couch in the apartment.
The woman was able to leave the home, Waters said.
Officers responding to the scene ordered the man to come out of the apartment. He finally came outside and approached the officers. Waters said he reached into his rear pocket where there was a firearm.
The officers fired, killing him, the Florida Times-Union reported. The gun was recovered in the man’s pocket.
An age was not provided for Periera, Waters said.
Waters also said it was the first shooting for each of the officers involved. An investigation continues.
