UNION TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A Pennsylvania woman driving the wrong way on an interstate highway in northern New Jersey caused two crashes, including a head-on collision that left three people seriously injured.
The crashes occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday in the westbound lanes of I-78 in Union Township.
A 51-year-old Bethlehem, Pennsylvania woman was driving eastbound in those lanes when she initially sideswiped a pickup truck, then collided head-on with another car, state police said.
The driver of the second car, a 41-year-old Sayreville man, and his two passengers - a 16-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man, both of Allentown, Pennsylvania - were all flown to a hospital, where they were being treated for undisclosed injuries that were considered “very serious,” state police said.
The wrong-way driver and the pickup truck driver were both treated for minor injuries.
No charges have been filed so far, but authorities said the crashes remain under investigation. Authorities have not said why the woman was traveling in the wrong direction.
