DILLON, S.C. (AP) - A county council in South Carolina voted to fire its administrator, saying he lived outside the county, arrived late to work and left early, and gave unauthorized raises.

Dillon County Administrator Tony Clyburn denied the reasons for his firing, saying he was renting a home in Dillon and spending most nights there and his accomplishments running the county for 17 months speak for themselves.

Four of the seven County Council members voted to fire Clyburn at Wednesday’s meeting.

Council Chairman Stevie Grice read a statement with several reasons he wanted to fire Clyburn, including a 2% raise that was not in the budget for county employees.

After reading the statement, Grice told people asking questions or requesting more details that his statement was self-explanatory, media outlets reported.

Clyburn said his firing was politically motivated, but did not go into details.

Dillon County has about 30,000 people and sits on Interstate 95 near the North Carolina state line.
