LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - A county in South Carolina has proposed dropping five holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Confederate Memorial Day, to allow county offices to be open to the public on those days.

There was no comment for or against the proposal during a virtual public hearing for Lexington County’s budget on Tuesday, County Spokesman Harrison Cahill told The State. Other holidays that could be removed are Veterans Day, Presidents Day and the day after Christmas, the county’s proposed budget said.

County employees who work during the holidays will have five additional paid leave days, Cahill said. Employees who take the holidays off would be paid for those days as part of their annual leave, he added.

The changes in the county’s budget has passed the first hurdle and now needs two more votes, which would likely take place next month.
