CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A public bus driver in Charlotte has been accused of hitting and killing a man standing at a bus stop and then fleeing the scene without administering any aid.
The driver, identified as Luis Garcia, was charged with a felony hit-and-run following the victim’s death Tuesday morning, news outlets reported. Officers found the victim, Michael Skelton Jr., lying on the street in front of the bus stop when they got to the scene, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a news release.
Police said Skelton, 58, attempted to get Garcia to stop the bus before he was struck.
Garcia’s employer, the Charlotte Area Transit System, said Wednesday he was fired following his arrest. The public transit system added in the statement their drivers “undergo a rigorous driving training program.” They did not say how long Garcia, 54, had been with the company.
Police said speed and impairment were not factors in the crash. It was not immediately clear if Garcia had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
