YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Bishop George Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown has submitted a letter of resignation to Pope Francis, citing health concerns.

The diocese announced Tuesday that Murry, 71, seeks to resign as he battles his latest bout with cancer, The Vindicator reported.

Murry was diagnosed with a form of acute leukemia in 2018 and underwent intensive chemotherapy at the Cleveland Clinic. He returned to the clinic in July 2018 for a recurrence of the cancer.

Monsignor John Zuraw said this third bout with cancer has left Murry unable to fully complete his responsibilities as bishop. He says the acceptance could take several weeks.

“Once it is accepted, an administrator will be appointed or elected for the diocese,” Zuraw said. “The whole process takes a year to a year and a half before another bishop is named here to Youngstown.”

Zuraw said Murry will remain bishop until his resignation is approved and that there will not be an interim appointed.
