CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis is talking about a nomadic childhood in the first general-election commercial of his re-election campaign.
The first-term Republican’s campaign committee said the spot began running on Tuesday on television and online, at a purchase price of over $750,000.
The commercial shows Tillis in what appears to be a trailer park. He talks about his family moving seven times before he was 16 and living “paycheck to paycheck.” During his 2014 campaign, Tillis said he was one of six children in a family he labeled as poor.
“My job is fighting for your job,” Tillis says. “We will build this economy back, and I’ll remember who needs it the most.”
Tillis is considered a major electoral target for national Democrats seeking to retake a majority in the chamber.
Democrat Cal Cunningham, who won his party’s Senate nomination in March, has benefited from a recent fundraising boom.
In a memo released Tuesday, Cunningham’s campaign accused Tillis of being a “weak politician” who won’t work for North Carolina residents if it means acting against the GOP or corporate interests in Washington.
Cunningham and Tillis haven’t been conducting traditional campaigning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both have focused on holding online events with citizens.
