BALTIMORE (AP) - Police in Baltimore on Wednesday identified a man believed to have shot an officer a day earlier after evading a traffic stop.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Baltimore resident Antonio Oliver Janifer, who authorities said should be considered armed and dangerous. Police said Janifer, 28, left the scene of the shooting after carjacking at least one vehicle.
Officer Joshua Jackson has been released from the hospital after being treated for a graze gunshot wound in the lower abdomen. Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said Jackson is in good condition.
Police said Jackson had been following an erratic driver Tuesday night and attempted to make a stop when the suspect crashed into a parked car, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Jackson followed behind Janifer before he turned around and shot him.
Harrison said Janifer then carjacked a blue Toyota Camry and fled the scene. Authorities believe he may have carjacked another vehicle.
“He has a history of violence and is a repeat violent offender who should have never been out on the streets of Baltimore,” Harrison said at a press conference. He asked anyone with information about Janifer’s whereabouts to contact police.
Harrison said Jackson did not fire his weapon during the situation.
