EASTHAM, Mass. (AP) - The Cape Cod National Seashore is getting nearly $12 million in building rehabilitation and septic system improvements.

An estimated $8 million in paving projects will ensure better roads and parking lots for the 4 million people who visit the seashore every year, the Cape Cod Times reports.

The parking lots at Salt Pond Visitor Center, Head of the Meadow Beach and sections of Cable Road have been earmarked for improvements, facilities director Karst Hoogeboom said.

A pedestrian- and bicycle-activated crossing beacon recently was installed at the intersection of Governor Prence Road and Route 6 in Eastham. A crosswalk will be painted soon, Hoogeboom said. The crosswalk will allow a direct connection from the Cape Cod Rail Trail to Fort Hill.

More than $2 million in septic system designs and restroom construction has been earmarked to improve facilities from the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham to Race Point in Provincetown, according to Hoogeboom.

Race Point is in line for a new $1 million septic system. The Province Lands Amphitheater in Provincetown is slated for a $100,000 renovation, while the seashore also plans to spend $132,000 to remove pilings from the water at North Beach Island in Chatham.
