LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Baptist Health Lexington has announced plans to build a medical campus that will create hundreds of jobs in Kentucky’s second-largest city.
Officials say long-term plans call for a hospital, a surgery center, 12 other buildings containing retail and medical office space and two parking garages in Lexington.
Work on the $1 billion construction project is expected to begin this year. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Baptist Health Lexington President William Sisson made the announcement Thursday.
The medical campus is expected to create 600 to 700 new jobs.
As part of its partnership with the city, Baptist Health is giving the city three acres for construction of a fire station. The land is valued at about $2 million.
Baptist also will provide annual flu shots to city employees for 20 years. The city says flu shots for its employees cost about $40,000 a year.
The Urban County Council gave initial approval to the plan earlier this month.
