PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) - Construction of an inclined elevator to bring visitors from street level to the base of the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown is expected to start this month despite the coronavirus pandemic, officials said.
The project’s general contractor is scheduled to begin testing at the site soon, with construction set to begin the week of May 18, K. David Weidner, executive director of the monument and the Provincetown Museum, told the Cape Cod Times.
The museum originally hoped to have the elevator in motion this year to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ 1620 landing in Provincetown, but now the project is expected to be completed early next year.
The outside elevator, called the Bradford Access Project, will shuttle people from Bradford Street up High Pole Hill to the monument.
The project is being funded privately with a $4.5 million loan from the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod.
“It represents some of the key ideals and values that have proudly become synonymous with Provincetown: All are welcome. Everyone is included,” Weidner said.
The ride up the hill will take about two minutes and offer views over the town.
