NORWELL, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts nonprofit plans to move ahead with removing a dam that will make it easier for the herring population to reach their spawning grounds.
The North and South Rivers Watershed Association believes the removal of the Peterson’s Pond dam in Third Herring Brook will restore the herring population, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.
The nonprofit will use a $20,000 grant from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, combined with other funding to allow the project to move forward, Samantha Woods, executive director of the North and South Rivers Watershed Association, said in a May 13 statement.
The dam is located on the Hanover-Norwell line and on the edge of the former Hanover Mall property, which is being redeveloped as a mixed-use development called Hanover Crossing. But Woods said the funding will allow the project to proceed without interfering with the mall reconstruction.
The association has already removed two dams on Third Herring Brook. The project is expected to begin this winter.
