FORREST CITY, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas State Police trooper fatally shot a man after an hours-long standoff that began when local deputies tried to serve an arrest warrant, authorities said Tuesday.
The standoff began late Monday morning when St. Francis County sheriff’s deputies tried to arrest Robert Wayne Lawson, 64, of Forrest City, Arkansas State Police said.
Lawson was holding a rifle and threatening the deputies, who tried to negotiate with him. Arkansas State Police troopers were called in for assistance, and the standoff lasted several hours, authorities said.
Lawson, who earlier in the evening fired a single shot at officers, was eventually shot and killed by a state trooper at 11:10 p.m., authorities said. No officers were hurt.
