Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer appeared in court Monday in Douglas County, Colorado after he was arrested over the weekend for allegedly firing off a gun following an argument at a poker game.
Latimer made his appearance virtually, appearing on a video call. The 27-year-old faces three felony (assault in the second degree, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm) and two misdemeanor (prohibited use of weapons and reckless endangerment) charges.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Latimer had gotten into a confrontation with a card player during a poker game in which the two had been drinking at the apartment of Roderick English, Latimer’s friend.
Police say there were seven-to-eight people at English’s apartment and that English then ordered everyone to leave following the argument.
At the court hearing Monday, Latimer’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said the argument involved an allegation of sexual assault on Latimer’s 4-year-old son, according to 9News.
Thirty minutes after the incident, police say Latimer returned to English’s home with a handgun and threatened to shoot English and English’s girlfriend. Latimer, according to the report, said he was going to “kill everybody.”
Latimer did not fire or point the gun at the two victims, police said, but went on to shoot two bullets within close proximity of English. English then pushed Latimer against a wall and Latimer retaliated by striking him on the head with the gun.
The situation de-escalated and Latimer was arrested at 3:15 a.m. He is due back in court again on July 24.
The Redskins signed Latimer, a six-year NFL veteran, to a one-year contract earlier this offseason.
