WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Mike Miller knows that for many right now, times are hard and tiny bits of kindness from strangers can mean the world.
The Wilmington native says that’s why every Friday, at exactly 3:02 p.m. to commemorate the 302 area code, he tries to give back to his Delaware community with a small, but simple gesture: A free meal from Chick-fil-A.
“I figured, what can I do personally to try to help some people,” said the music promoter who lives in Atlanta but has come back to Wilmington due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Every Friday for the last month, the 37-year-old has posted on Twitter - where he goes by @DirtyDelaware - and Instagram that he is giving two people meals from the popular chicken sandwich chain.
He then takes all the people who reply and puts their Twitter and Instagram handles into a fishbowl and selects two for whom he provides meals.
“Some people don’t like going to Chick-fil-A because of the long lines and wait so I said I’ll do the dirty work,” he said.
After a couple weeks of selecting people, others decided to join in and help Miller give people free meals.
Last weekend, with the help of others, he gave out 20 meals to mothers and children.
“We’re used to helping our communities,” he said.
Before this past weekend, costs came out of his own pocket. Miller said he traveled as far as Dover but was excited to just be giving out something small to bring joy.
And people have responded well.
“Shout out to @DirtyDelaware for the Mother’s Day chick fil a! Appreciate it!” one winner posted.
