Washington Redskins receiver Cody Latimer was arrested Saturday in Colorado and charged with assault in the second degree and four other charges, according to the Douglas County Police Department.
Police responded to a call reporting shots fired just after midnight. When they arrived, officers found three individuals inside and after an investigation, Latimer was taken into custody. Police say an argument had broken out before shots were fired within the apartment.
In addition to assault, Latimer was charged with menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Three of Latimer’s charges are felonies: Assault, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Latimer, 27, was held on a $25,000 bond, but later released after posting bail.
The Redskins signed Latimer this offseason to boost their receiving depth. Prior to Washington, Latimer spent the last two seasons with the New York Giants and his first four years with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos drafted Latimer in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Indiana.
“We are aware of the situation and have informed the NFL League Office,” the Redskins said in a statement. “We will continue to gather more information and have no further comment at this time.”
Latimer’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, implied that Latimer was provoked into violence.
“There’s an entire back story to this situation that constitutes one of the most highly provocative situations you can imagine,” Steinberg said in a statement to ESPN. “Please withhold judgment until all the facts of what took place that night are known.”
Latimer’s arrest comes two days after former Redskins cornerback Quinton Dunbar was arrested in Florida, where police say he was involved in a robbery at a party.
