DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The family of a black man who was fatally shot by a white police officer in an Ohio Walmart store has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city, according to the family’s lawyer.
Beavercreek police officer Sean Williams shot 22-year-old John Crawford III soon after he picked up an unpackaged pellet rifle that he found on a store shelf in August 2014.
The city and Crawford family have reached a settlement agreement of $1.7 million and police policy changes, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Thursday.
“I don’t think any type of monetary reward that will bring much satisfaction to the family, this was a decision made based on the facts in the litigation,” said Crawford family attorney Michael Wright.
A federal grand jury declined to indict Williams in Crawford’s death in July 2017.
Wright said the family intends to move forward with a wrongful death lawsuit against Walmart, which is scheduled to go to trial on Nov. 2.
