FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Grants from the U.S. Department of Energy have been awarded to nine projects in Kentucky, state officials said.

The projects aim to support education, reduce the energy burden in poor communities and improve energy security, Gov. Andy Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman said Wednesday in a statement.

The federal agency provided more than $600,000 for the projects, state officials said. The Energy and Environment Cabinet plans to work with organizations to begin delivering the programs later this year.

The University of Kentucky Center For Applied Energy Research will get the largest award of $182,000 for an electric vehicle project in middle schools across Kentucky.

The initiatives will provide long-term benefits to Kentucky residents, Goodman said.

“Affordable electricity is a primary driver of our economy and essential for the wellbeing of everyone. Now more than ever in this time of the coronavirus pandemic, it is important to ensure continuing affordability and resilience of Kentucky’s energy resources, and to invest in energy education that integrates new technologies and practices in areas that support our infrastructure and families,” she said.
