NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Loyola University New Orleans College of Law is adding new master’s degree programs in environmental and health law.

“Our goal with these programs is to attract both recent college graduates seeking to enter the fields of healthcare and environmental compliance and experienced employees in these fields seeking to advance their careers,” law school dean and professor Madeleine M. Landrieu said in a news release Wednesday.

Loyola is the first law school in Louisiana and among a few in the region to offer master’s degree programs in the two highly regulated fields, Landrieu said.

The master’s in health law and administration will include client work, management training, and classes about policy, preparing students for management jobs in hospitals and other facilities. It will give recent graduates a chance to look at a variety of possible careers and give professionals a way to learn more about healthcare and compliance law while they continue to work, the statement said.

The first classes will help students understand the healthcare delivery system and the major laws that govern it, followed by electives such as bioethics and healthcare privacy and security.

Students in the Environmental Law program will similarly begin their studies with foundational courses to help them understand the major environmental statutes and regulations, along with agencies’ interpretations and enforcement of them, then take electives such as Oil & Gas and Climate Change law.

Environmental compliance is a growing area in a wide variety of industries, Landrieu said. She said the environmental law degree will prepare graduates to work in national, state, and local government and nonprofit jobs, and for companies that need someone to keep track of changes in environmental regulation and to assess and manage the environmental impact of their work.
