WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island woman whose 7-month-old baby girl died after the baby’s father passed out on her while high on drugs pleaded no contest on Friday to involuntary manslaughter.
Mariah Ramos was set to go to trial next week for her role in the baby’s death in 2017, The Providence Journal reported.
Prosecutors agreed to reduce the charge from second-degree murder to involuntary manslaughter in exchange for her plea, Ramos’ attorney Anthony Traini said.
Authorities said Ramos left the baby home alone with the baby’s visibly intoxicated father, who had taken a cocktail of drugs including heroin and fentanyl. When the mother returned, she found the father asleep on the baby, authorities said.
The father, Ryan Beeley, was sentenced in January to 10 years in prison.
Ramos could get anywhere between no time behind bars and up to 30 years when the judge sentences her in May, Traini said.
Ramos had been deemed incompetent and held at Eleanor Slater Hospital for most of the case. She was released on home confinement in December.
