LAS VEGAS (AP) - A convicted felon from North Dakota will face at least five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in Las Vegas to drug and weapon charges stemming from a traffic stop in Nevada, a prosecutor said.

Brandon Patton, 28, of Minot, North Dakota, pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and two firearms charges, court records show.

Federal public defenders representing Patton didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to messages. His plea avoided a trial scheduled in May on charges including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers found Patton had about 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of meth, 5.2 ounces (149 grams) of heroin, almost 13 ounces (366 grams ) of marijuana and two handguns while he was a passenger in a vehicle stopped in May 2019, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Trutanich said.

Patton was previously convicted in North Dakota of felony delivery of a controlled substance, Trutanich said.

Patton also faces lifetime supervised release and a $750,000 fine at sentencing June 9 in Las Vegas, the prosecutor said.
