The former tax collector in a small Massachusetts town who pleaded guilty to stealing about $250,000 in municipal funds has been ordered to pay $100 per month as restitution during the remainder of her three-year probationary period.
Former Barre tax collector Marcia Langelier pleaded guilty to embezzlement in November 2018 and was sentenced to a year in jail, The Telegram & Gazette reported Wednesday.
From 2006 until 2012, she kept tax payments residents paid in cash and then falsified town records to hide the thefts, prosecutors said. She used the money to fuel a gambling habit, authorities said.
At a restitution hearing recently, it was disclosed that she had forfeited her pension and turned over her total pension contribution to the Worcester Regional Retirement Board to the town as restitution. It was determined that she still owed $70,000 to the town.
The judge determined that because she cannot mind meaningful employment and has medical issues, she must only pay $100 per month while on probation, which ends in June 2022.
