CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - A Chandler man who said he was trying to clean a rifle when it accidentally discharged has been arrested for the fatal shooting of his wife, police said Tuesday.

Police said 30-year-old Jordan Taylor has been booked into jail on suspicion of one count of second-degree murder.

It was unclear if Taylor has a lawyer yet.

Police said Taylor told investigators that he was trying to clean a rifle at the couple’s apartment Tuesday morning when it went off and his 27-year-old wife was shot once in the chest.

She was transported to a hospital and died during surgery, according to police.

Police initially called the incident a negligent discharge of a weapon. But court documents state that Taylor was pointing the rifle at his wife when it went off and he had at least two other accidental discharge incidents with the same weapon in the past week.

The paperwork also stated that there was previous reports of domestic violence involving the couple and Taylor had been arrested in past years for assault, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct and was convicted of marijuana possession.
