LAKEVILLE, Minn. (AP) - A man who was shot and killed by police in Lakeville had “immediately” opened fire on officers as they were trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant for assaulting a police officer, the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Tuesday.
Kent Kruger, 36, died of multiple gunshot wounds in Friday’s confrontation at a Lakeville residence. The officer who fired his weapon was identified Tuesday as Dakota County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Durdall.
Durdall, who has been with the sheriff’s office for 22 years, was placed on standard administrative leave, the BCA said.
Officials said Dakota County deputies and Lakeville police were serving an emergency order for protection on Kruger, and they were trying to arrest him on a warrant for assaulting a peace officer.
“Upon entering the residence officers encountered Mr. Kruger who immediately began firing on them. Sgt. Durdall then discharged his weapon, striking Mr. Kruger,” the BCA said.
No one else was injured and Kruger was the only one at the home at the time. The BCA said Lakeville officers wear body cameras but Dakota County sheriff’s deputies do not. The BCA is trying to determine whether the Lakeville cameras recorded any of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
