DETROIT (AP) - The founder of the iconic Swanson Funeral Homes in Detroit has died.
O’Neil D. Swanson died Friday morning, the funeral home said. He was 86.
No other details of his death were released, and funeral arrangements have not been completed.
Swanson opened his first funeral home in 1958 on Detroit’s east side, and the company currently are two chapels in the city.
Swanson Funeral Home performed services for a number of notable Detroit residents including singer Aretha Franklin and civil rights icon Rosa Parks, according to The Detroit News.
O’Neil D. Swanson also was one of the founding organizers of Detroit-based First Independence Bank.
“His graciousness is unprecedented in caring for families in need of comfort, which I know will be returned to the Swanson family,” bank Chair and Chief Executive Kenneth Kelly said Friday in a statement. “His leadership as a founding director of First Independence Bank 50 years ago is a legacy of service to others that our entire team tries to embody on a daily basis.”
