Hillary Clinton pounced on grim coronavirus pandemic stats for the U.S. on Friday by parlaying the news into a bit of anti-Trump humor.
The former secretary of state reacted to the nation surpassing China’s and Italy’s official infection numbers by yukking it up for her 27 million Twitter followers.
“He did promise ’America First,’” the two-time failed presidential candidate deadpanned in response to the macabre news.
The latest count of Americans infected with the virus hit 85,707 on Friday.
U.S. deaths attributed to the virus, which originated in China, tallied 1,195, CNN reported. Analysts have called into question the veracity of China’s official tally.
Mr. Trump’s administration has denied claims that it didn’t take the virus seriously, often citing travel restrictions placed on China in late January.
The White House also released 56 “decisive actions” on March 19 to demonstrate its pro-active approach to curtailing the virus’ spread throughout the nation.
January, for instance, saw the creation of the coronavirus incident management system; public health entry screening took place in San Francisco, New York JFK, and Los Angeles; and efforts to develop a vaccine was announced by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health’s infectious disease institute.
