RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) - A woman has been charged criminally in the death of a newborn whose body was found inside a trash bag at college dormitory outside Cleveland.
Breyona Reddick, 19, of Cleveland, was indicted by a Portage County grand jury on aggravated murder, felonious assault, endangering children, tampering with evidence and abuse of corpse charges. She was arrested Wednesday, The Ravenna Record-Courier reported.
A message seeking comment was left Thursday with Reddick’s attorney. She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning.
Reddick was a student at Hiram College, a small liberal arts school, when the newborn’s body was found in October inside a trash bag that had been left in a dormitory restroom.
The Portage County coroner said the child was a boy and was born full-term, the newspaper reported.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office in Cleveland ruled the newborn’s death a homicide and said the cause was asphyxiation due to exposure and postpartum inattention. The infant was alive nor more than an hour and still had his umbilical cord attached, according to a report.
A Hiram College spokeswoman said Reddick is not currently enrolled at the school.
Hiram is roughly 42 miles (68 kilometers) southeast of downtown Cleveland.
