The Washington Redskins have discussed trading for Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, but are in “wait and see mode” to observe how his market develops.
ESPN reported late Tuesday that the Redskins’ discussion didn’t trigger “definitive interest” in the 30-year-old, who was given permission to seek a trade from the team that drafted him first overall in 2011. The Redskins have been thought of as a logical landing spot for Newton since coach Ron Rivera was in Carolina for the former MVP’s first nine seasons. Rivera, too, has said he wants to create a “very competitive quarterback competition for Dwayne Haskins.”
Regarding Washington as a potential destination for Cam Newton, I’m told the team discussed it, talks did not rise to the level of definitive interest at this time, more of a “wait & see mode” right now observing Newton’s market. #Skins also like their young guys too, per source.

But there are reasons, in theory, that could give the Redskins pause in acquiring Newton. First, the quarterback is set to make $18.6 million in base salary in 2020. While that’s affordable for the caliber of passer Newton is, the Redskins already have Alex Smith under contract for $21.4 million and Haskins for $3.2 million. Do the Redskins want to commit that much more money solely at one position?
Then, there are perhaps even bigger concerns about Newton’s health. The quarterback played just two games last season and underwent foot surgery in December. In 2018, Newton was also bothered by a shoulder injury, which required an operation after the year.
Panthers owner David Tepper had previously said Newton’s health would be a big factor in determining whether the three-time Pro Bowler would be in Carolina in 2020. On Tuesday, the Panthers reached an agreement with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Asked about Newton last month, Rivera expressed confidence his former quarterback would return to form.
“I would never bet against Cam Newton,” Rivera said.
Washington could always wait to see if the Panthers just release Newton instead of trading him. The Athletic reported the Panthers will likely cut the quarterback if they can’t find a deal for him.
