Former Redskins quarterback Case Keenum agreed to join the Cleveland Browns on a three-year, $18 million deal Monday on the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period.
Keenum started eight games for Washington last season and was named the starter out of training camp before he was eventually replaced by first-rounder Dwayne Haskins.
After the year ended, Keenum, 32, said he wanted to go to a team that he could compete for playing time. That’s unlikely to happen in Cleveland, where he’ll serve as the backup to Baker Mayfield.
But Keenum will reunite with Kevin Stefanski, the Browns’ head coach who served as the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterbacks coach in 2017, the year Keenum led Minnesota to the NFC Championship. The Browns hired Stefanski earlier this year.
Of the $18 million, $10 million is reportedly guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
In 2019, Keenum posted a quarterback rating of 91.3 — throwing for 1,707 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He went 1-7 as a starter, his lone win coming against the Miami Dolphins in October.
Keenum’s deal can become official Wednesday, when the NFL begins its new calendar year.
