Journalists, open government advocates and others have a new tool for tracking state legislation related to transparency.

The coalition is working with the software company Quorum to identify bills that contain key search terms such as “public records.”

Coalition outreach manager Kelsey Ryan said the dashboards will update in real time. They will include information such as the description of the bill, its sponsor, its status and a link to its text.

Any journalist, news organization or First Amendment group will be able to search and download the information for research purposes or to create their own, more detailed tracking system.

Ryan says the dashboards will inevitably pick up more legislation than is relevant. For states that do not have legislative sessions in 2020, Ryan says the dashboards will include bills from 2019. Information at www.nfoic.org.
