PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Employees making minimum wage in Rhode Island can expect to receive an additional $1 per hour.
Gov. Gina Raimondo signed a bill into law Tuesday that raises the minimum wage from $10.50 to $11.50, effective Oct. 1. The state House of Representatives passed the legislation in February.
Some Republicans voted against the bill, saying the steadily rising wage threatens to hurt employers and could lead to job losses. Some Democrats supported the bill, though they had wanted a higher raise.
The minimum wage has increased multiple times since 2012, when it was $7.40. It was bumped up from $10.10 to $10.50 at the beginning of 2019.
The hourly rate in Massachusetts is $12.75, and Maine’s is $12. Connecticut’s minimum wage is $11.
