GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) - Protesters in a small city in Kansas joined demonstrators around the world in speaking out against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
More than 1,000 people demonstrated Wednesday in Garden City, a city of roughly 26,000 people in western Kansas, Kansas News Service reported. A high school senior organized the protest.
Demonstrators marched around a Garden City park chanting “black lives matter,” “George Floyd” and “I can’t breathe.”
Floyd, a handcuffed black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for minutes, even after he stopped moving.
Garden City police said in a statement that the agency listened to protesters’ message and “will continue to work with the community to maintain a growing, positive relationship.”
