OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A day after she rescinded a curfew, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert on Thursday announced she would reinstate the restriction for Friday night and Saturday night.
Stothert said she took the action after learning from police of five events planned Friday and a large gathering expected Saturday to mark the death of George Floyd after his arrest by Minneapolis police.
The curfew will be stretch from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both nights.
“This is unfortunate but necessary. We will continue to encourage and support peaceful protests, but we must take proactive steps to reduce risks to everyone; the participants, the public and first responders,” Stothert said.
The move came a day after Stothert said Wednesday she would rescind the curfew.
Although most protests in Omaha have been peaceful, some involved in demonstrations last weekend vandalized property and one protester was shot to death in the Old Market district.
The curfew doesn’t apply to everyone, including those going to and from work, homeless people, some health care workers and people who work in the media.
