RICHFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Five people died in a head-on crash on an upstate New York highway Sunday afternoon, police announced on Monday.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened on Route 79 in Richford around 5:20 p.m. Sunday when a Honda Pilot that was passing another vehicle collided with an oncoming Toyota Tacoma.

Three of the five people in the Honda were killed and both of the two people in the Toyota died. The other two people in the Honda were hospitalized, one of them in critical condition. Names and other information about the victims was not released.

The speed limit on that highway is 55 mph but the sheriff’s office didn’t say how fast the cars were going.
