The New England Patriots decided to sign another quarterback, after all.
The Patriots agreed to terms with former MVP Cam Newton on Sunday on an incentive-heavy one-year deal, according to multiple reports. Newton now has the chance to replace Tom Brady, who left New England this offseason to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Newton, 31, was released from the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason. He is coming off a season-ending foot injury and there are questions whether he’ll be healthy enough to regain his form. Newton, who also dealt with a shoulder injury in 2018, appeared in just two games last season.
Newton’s deal with the Patriots is a one-year contract worth up to $7.5 million, the NFL Network reported.
After losing Brady, the Patriots appeared set on having 2019 fourth-rounder Jarrett Stidham compete for the job with veteran Brian Hoyer. But now with Newton in the mix, New England adds an established starter who has Super Bowl experience.
In 2015, Newton won the MVP as the Panthers went 15-1 and lost to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.

Newton now will step into the mix to try to help replace former Patriots’ QB Tom Brady.
