PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - More than a third of the 113 Rhode Island legislators running for reelection are running unopposed.
At least 38 of the contested elections feature same party candidates battling for one seat, the Providence Journal reported.
Republican Rep. John Lyle of Lincoln is seeking reelection as an independent and told The Journal that “in the words of Ronald Reagan, I feel my party (has) left me.”
“I have always viewed myself to be a moderate on social issues and a fiscal conservative. There doesn’t seem to be a place for my kind of politics in my old party,” Lyle said.
Several legislators announced they would not seek reelection on Wednesday, including: Representatives Michael Morin of Woonsocket and Dennis Canario of Portsmouth; and Senators James Sheehan of North Kingstown, Donna Nesselbush of Pawtucket, Erin Lynch Prata of Warwick and Adam Satchell of West Warwick.
